Michael Patrick Ellard, Senior Pastor

Hi, I’m Mike Ellard. I’m glad you’ve come to read a little bit about me.

I started my professional career as a software developer for a management and technology consulting firm. The pay was good, I enjoyed the work, and I had strong friendships with my colleagues. But there was always a feeling that I was waiting for something, that I still hadn’t figured out what I was really supposed to be doing.

Then I ran away and joined the circus! I quit my job and began my studies at the Pacific School of Religion, an interdenominational seminary in Berkeley. PSR was a great experience for me. I love talking to people about their faith and their religious traditions, and PSR and its partner schools in the Graduate Theological Union brought me into contact with a seemingly endless supply of people from different backgrounds and perspectives.

At PSR and the GTU, I got both a Master of Divinity (a professional degree for pastors) and a Master of Arts in Biblical Languages (an academic degree for people wanting a deeper understanding of the sacred texts). When it comes to the Bible, I still consider myself a student. I feel like every time I preach or lead one of our Holy Conversations sessions, I learn something new about scripture and the way that it connects to our modern world.

In addition to ministry, my two other passions are music and teaching.

I love to sing. Sometimes during service, I will stop and create a worship song based a word given to me by the congregation. I am also a long-time member of the San Francisco Pride Band. During the pandemic, I created more than thirty virtual choir music mash-up videos with myself and other performers. In doing so I deepened my own skills and appreciation for the power of making music in a group.

I also love to teach. I started out by teaching for the University of California at Santa Cruz and then went on to teach at SAP and Apple Inc.

What do I hope people will experience when they come to Valley Ministries? I hope that people will feel the joy of being in a community that respects them and loves them as children of God. I hope that people will develop new friendships in the church, even as their relationship with God deepens and grows. I hope that people will gain confidence in their abilities and develop new skills and interests as they discover who God has created them to be.

Come join us so that we can share this journey together!

Scott A. Hill, Pastor

Pastor Scott graduated with a Masters in Divinity from Claremont School of Theology where he was awarded The Jeanne Audrey Powers Award from the Center for Sexuality, Gender and Religion. Pastor Scott also has a BA in Labor & Human Studies and an MA in Negotiations, Conflict Resolution, and Peacebuilding from California State University Dominguez Hills.

Pastor Scott became a Christian in the Church of Christ at the age of twelve and attended Bible College for 3 ½ years.  During those years, Scott struggled with Christianity and Homosexuality.  There were not many avenues of reconciliation within the Christian community at that time.

Always struggling with church, Pastor Scott’s love for the Divine never wavered.

Scott began working aggressively with those who had HIV/AIDS. The activism led to the further fight of LGBTQI+ issues. Doors continued to open and eventually Scott became an internal/external labor organizer working with mental health and hospital workers in Southern California.

Pastor Scott currently is a labor organizer and represents the workers at UC Davis Medical Center. He was Chaplain for hospice at Los Angeles County Medical Center. Pastor Scott has discovered similarities between working in the labor movement and being a part of the Christian movement.

Pastor Scott lives in West Sacramento with his partner, Jesus “Javi” Carranza, his Siamese Cat, Prince, his Maltese dog, Timmy and his love birds Mango and Tango.

Leanna Hamilton, Pastor

Pastor Leanna comes to Valley Ministries with many years in ministry in and out of MCC.

Pastor Leanna was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is the only daughter in a family of six kids. She was not raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but as a teenager she became involved. She served a missionary for the LDS church in the Cleveland, Ohio region in 1979 and 1980. It wasn’t until she returned from her mission in late 1980 that she came to realize that she was a lesbian. She tried to remain in the church, but found it was not compatible with who she was. She left the LDS church in 1983. In 1984 she was officially excommunicated because she was lesbian.

While attending her first gay pride event, Leanna became aware of a church which followed many of the theologies that she loved. She joined The Restoration Church of Jesus Christ and served in many leadership positions during her time with them, including as the Presiding Bishop of the denomination.

In 1994 God called Leanna to join MCC. She joined Cathedral of Promise MCC in Sacramento in late 1994 and served under Rev Elder Freda Smith.

In 2004 Pastor Leanna left Cathedral of Promise for seminary at Pacific School of Religion. She graduated from PSR in 2007 with a Master of Divinity degree and a Certificate of Religion and Sexuality from the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry. In 2014 she received a Master of Theological Studies from Liberty University Seminary.

Leanna served as pastor at New Hope MCC in Santa Rosa from 2008 to 2010 after which she took a leave from ministry. During her leave, Rev. Terri Miller told her that God wasn’t through with her, and the time would come when she would be called back into ministry.

In 2023, God called Pastor Leanna back into ministry here at Valley Ministries MCC.
