A Special Devotional from Rev. Ellen

I think everyone likes to win, right? No one would rather be a loser. But in Jesus’ order of things, this is exactly how it’s going to be !What does that mean? I think that if we are thinking and doing and believing what God wants us to, being last doesn’t really matter!

I like to win, and I admit that I am or can be rather competitive! My tennis partner and I just won our first match this Wednesday, and boy, were we happy! But winning isn’t everything. Our purpose in life is to be the best person we can be for God. God gives us gifts and talents and wants us to use them for good. It’s not to make us more successful or rich. It’s not to make us more powerful and authoritative. It’s to give us opportunities to spread the love and grace that God gives us. Of course, we need to make sure WE are okay — we are to love ourselves, too! 

I think that Jesus wants us to make it a priority that others are doing okay..making sure that others around us have the love and care that all people should have. Standing up for others who don’t have a voice (like immigrants, unhoused, people of color, the disadvantaged) is important. Making sure that others are treated fairly and given equal opportunities is something we can help to bring about.

When we look out for others and treat others with love and respect, we aren’t swayed by who’s winning or losing. We just live with open hearts and minds. Like Jesus would do. And those are the people who may not finish first in the world’s eyes, but in the eyes of God, they are the ones that make a difference in God’s eyes. They are the last who will be the first!
