Music Director Job Posting

Music Director
Valley Ministries Metropolitan Community Church
4118 Coronado AveStockton, California 95204

Valley Ministries MCC is an inclusive church — loving God and serving God’s diverse people. We encourage everyone in their spiritual journey, empower all to use their spiritual gifts, and promote justice and compassion.

Sound Alive is our praise team. We use music to help people have spiritual experiences. We are seeking a music director to lead Sound Alive in our Sunday worship services.

Our core repertoire is modern praise and worship. We may sing a traditional hymn from time to time, but that is not our focus. We have a small group of singers of varying skill levels. We would like to grow our choir and add keyboards, percussion, and guitars.

Core activities:

  • Work with Sound Alive, the pastor, and worship design team to choose music for upcoming services
  • Lead Sunday morning rehearsals before worship
  • Lead music in worship on Sunday mornings
  • Play keyboard and/or other instruments
  • Keep us in compliance with copyright law. We have CCLI licenses that give us access to a wide catalog of music for rehearsal, performance, and streaming.

Other items on our wishlist:

  • Lead weeknight rehearsals
  • Help the choir and musicians develop their musical skills
  • Work with our sound engineer to keep our sound balanced and professional
  • Plan, rehearse, and lead special music for Christmas, Easter, and special events
  • Support church members and members of Sound Alive in writing new music for the church
  • A long term goal for our group is to perform for civic and interfaith gatherings outside of the church

Our music director position is budgeted at $750 per month.  This amount assumes you would be here every Sunday for service and rehearsal before service.  It also includes one non-Sunday rehearsal per month.  We can be flexible based on your availability.  If you can’t commit to every Sunday, we can work with you on that.  If you are available to lead a weeknight rehearsal every week, we would welcome that.  The final pay package will depend on the scope of work that you agree upon with us.

If you are a student who is new to leading a praise team, we will be happy to work with you and coach you in developing your leadership skills. Just be clear with us about what skills you currently have and what skills you are seeking to develop.

Valley Ministries MCC was founded to be a safe and affirming space for LGBTQ+ people to worship. Our current congregation is a blend of LGBTQ+ and straight, cisgender and transgender. You should be comfortable working with LGBTQ+ people.
